Skáli  þinn.

Your cabin.

Skáli  þinn (pronounced SKOW-lee thin) is an Old Norse translation of "your cabin."

The skáli  þinn series is a collection of modern cabins designed specifically for off-grid, remote locations where traditional construction fails and energy is a precious commodity.

Most cabin plans are designed for typical properties and then "adapted" for remote locations. We took the opposite approach. We started with some of the harshest conditions in mind and designed our way back to luxury.

The SIPs Envelope: Every design in this series utilizes structural insulated panels (SIPs)for foundation, exterior walls, roof and even floors. This isn't just about speed; it's about creating a continuous, high-performance thermal blanket that keeps you warm in a blizzard and cool in the peak of summer with minimal energy input.

Building Science at the Core: These plans incorporate advanced building science to manage moisture, ensure superior air quality, provide durability and resilience.

Remote-Ready Logistics: Building miles from the nearest hardware store is a challenge. Our designs prioritize materials and methods—like SIPs—that reduce waste, shorten on-site labor time, and simplify the supply chain.

A Legacy of Durability: Using "best practice" construction details, these cabins are designed to be multi-generational. We’re building for the next hundred years, not the next ten.

Whether you are looking for a compact retreat or a family basecamp, the skáli  þinn series provides the framework you need to build with confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Time and clarity. A custom design is a journey; a skáli  þinn series plan is a destination you can reach today. You get the aesthetic DNA of a MINN WORKSHOP cabin at a fraction of the custom design fee and without the several-month wait time.

  • You receive a comprehensive digital drawing set (PDF) designed to the same rigorous standards as our custom luxury builds. This includes floor plans, elevations, building sections, assemblies and construction details. It is a "construction-ready" roadmap that translates high-end design intent into documents your builder understands.

  • Absolutely. While I sell the skáli  þinn series plans "as-is," I provide an optional add-on service to make design adjustments. I want the cabin to fit your life, not the other way around.

  • The drawings are prepared to meet general residential codes at the time of creation. Because building codes vary from the North Shore of Minnesota to the mountains of Colorado, you will be responsible for ensuring the plans comply with local building codes, zoning ordinances, and HOA requirements. You will need to have the drawings reviewed and sealed by a locally licensed structural engineer and/or architect prior to construction.

  • I don't leave you stranded in the woods. While skáli  þinn series plans are a self-service product, MINN WORKSHOP offers Consultation Blocks. If you or your builder hit a snag or need a professional "eye" during the process, you can book a session to ensure the integrity of the design stays intact.

  • Most plan sites are just that, “generic”. They prioritize quantity over quality. I am a solo practitioner—I design, manage construction, and represent clients daily. These plans aren't just drawings; they are informed by real-world job site experience dealing with remote locations and a deep obsession with how people actually live in nature.
